Drawing upon an instantly recognisable aesthetic, this unique K3 bears similar aesthetics to other pieces in Sarpaneva’s Korona series. It features the engraving “Seasons” on the caseback, which was a series of wristwatches created by Stepan to mark the seasons of Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter, in different colour-ways. Unlike many of those watches, this unique variant features Sarpaneva’s characterful moonphase, and is made unique by the absence of a centre seconds.
Crafted from stainless steel, the angular yet subdued scalloped edges of the case are particularly eye-catching. Further to this, the dial takes inspiration from grilles, with an openworked face that gives us a glimpse of the teal-coloured luminescence, recalling the cold winter skyline of Nordic countries.
A Unique Piece
Meanwhile, the dial configuration is reminiscent of the Korona K0 Northern Lights, with a few significant deviations, such as the lack of lume filled index dots and the slender hands rendered in pure steel, compared to the thicker lume-filled hands found on pieces in the Seasons series.
Factors, such as the luminous blue dial and the openworked, scalloped pattern are a familiar staple within Sarpaneva’s oeuvre, and are repeated in a similar fashion with this example. The enigmatic moonphase complication sits at six o’clock, a motif that has become synonymous with the brand, repeated throughout so much of his work. It has been suggested that the face of the moon is in fact a stylised version of Stepan Sarpaneva’s own face, but more distinctly, it is reminiscent of old school pocket watches, but with the watchmaker’s characteristic style.
Movement
The display caseback allows view of the movement, with the teal rotor mirroring the dial and the familiar moonphase showing the ‘dark side’ of the moon, rendered in rose gold. Sarpaneva favours the use of Soprod’s self-winding A10 in his watches, extensively modified to suit his requirements for each piece, beating at a rate of 28,800 A/h. The movement is rhodium-plated and carries perlage-finishing throughout, with a power-reserve of 42 hours.
If sold within the United Kingdom, this Sarpaneva Seasons will be subject to 20% VAT.
